Organisations are becoming increasingly complex with the introduction and use of large Cyber Physical Systems. As the manufacturing industry develops into Industry 4.0 the role of humans is changing. Humans are instrumental; they have an ability to address unplanned situations, and can offer solutions by drawing from experience and tacit knowledge. This valuable source of knowledge provides flexibility and often leads to innovation. Optimising the management of this knowledge source would undoubtedly lead to improved organisational performance.

To strategically improve knowledge management an Internet of Things evaluation tool has been designed which provides an objective view of an organisations one-to-one communication. This lightweight wearable device collects communication data across an organisation to provide an improved analysis of an organisations communication performance. The device makes use of a combined Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi chip to form a power efficient architecture. The efficiency of the system results in a minimalist wearable device which employees are happy to wear.

The success of this system has been evaluated through industry testing, at Frostechnic. Feedback was gathered from representatives at both Frostechnic and Fanuc UK providing insightful further recommendations. Tom Bouchier, Fanuc UK Managing Director can see a wealth of industry innovations as a result of the knowledge this system may provide.
